Vintage Dining set (kitchen set)

Ah, finally done.

We are in the middle of soft winter, well except for today.

So this was the perfect time to get this dining set finished.

I picked this up off of kijiji and again, fell in love with the legs and the versatility of the table.

This is what I started with.

See how nasty the veneer is? When I went to pick this set up the wife was almost throwing the stuff off the porch in order to get it out of her home. I wonder if there are bad memories involved? Oh well, I loved it and knew I could do something with it.

Once I got it home I realized just how bad the veneer on the top was. Thankfully it was the only veneer on the whole thing. I had heard that often times there is lovely wood hiding under it, so I took a chance. Thinking to myself that even if the wood was rotten, I could always paint it.

That's how I work..I wing it. If one thing doesn't work, I always have a plan "B" in mind.

Can't have one plan and then throw something away if that plan doesn't work right?

I hate removing veneer because it is always a pain. But then I read someone out on blogland that if you heat it with an iron it helps. Sooooooo I tried it. It took a bit of getting used to, but it worked wonderfully. :)

This is what I ended up with after sanding and sanding and painting and distressing.

Pretty small when all folded up.

Normal size and I put the chairs in the corner for this pic..no reason, just felt like it :)

I am so very glad I trusted my gut and removed all that nasty veneer! The wood looks even better in real life (needing photo lessons in the worst way here)
